Injection molding is a production procedure for making parts by injecting hot material into a mold, or mold in injection. Injection molding can work with a host of molds mainly consisting of metals, polymers, glasses, epoxy composites, and thermoplastic or thermoset composites. Injection molding can also be used to create parts in a simple pressurized environment. The parts can have either smooth external surfaces or internal hollows with various depths depending on the application. Generally this type of molding is used in a few specialized applications, such as auto-feed components, plastic die casting, and injection molding for high-volume plastic parts.

Another common form of injection molding machine is cavity-precision machining. In this process, a computer model of the part or product is built using CAD software. Based on the software, a computer-controlled machine is programmed to cut the part or product with just the right level of precision. In this case, the machines are typically equipped with digital machines and CNC machines. The accuracy level of the parts produced will be precise enough to meet the requirements of the client.

In order to use injection molding to manufacture plastic parts, a machine will need to be carefully engineered. Machines typically come in two different varieties - those that use compressed air and those that use hot air. The compressed air variety is typically used for smaller parts or less intricate designs, while the hot air type is usually used when producing intricate parts on a larger scale. The compressed air machines are also used to harden the parts to precise specifications. On the other hand, the hot air machines are used to inject the melted plastic into the proper cavities in the other types of molds.

One of the primary considerations for the injection molding process is whether the materials can be sourced at a reasonable cost. Typically, molds will be purchased from a number of manufacturers, although sometimes it makes sense to source the materials in house. In many cases, this means that a small amount of plastic parts will be needed for a single part. In this case, it is typically better to source the parts in house since the costs will be significantly lower than if purchasing them from another manufacturer. Lastly, it should be noted that suppliers should be able to give information on their processes and experience.
